A note on Yoga and cultural appropriation:
It’s time and time again in the wellness community that we see ancient, spiritual practices being stripped down and turned into something that fits into the western mold. Not only does this happen in Yoga, but in many other cultures and practices. As a white woman who teaches Yoga this issue is directly related to me, and the role that people like me play in the colonization of Yoga. I’d like to take this moment to remind you that while you have the power to sculpt your spirituality into something that works for you, that should always come with a sense of respect to the cultures and traditions you take from. In order to try to do my part within the community I strive to teach classes that embody Yoga through; the use of Sanskrit words - to the best of my abilities, including dhyana and pranayama in my teachings, continuing to read, learn, and spread awareness where I can, and choosing not to teach private Yoga. My resource page is a working list of teachers, articles, podcasts, and books that I find helpful and important in dismantling the colonization of Yoga. I am by no means an expert, I am merely a soul who is trying to do her best. I hope together we can listen and learn in order to build a safer, more accessible Yoga and wellness space for all.
I’m your coach, Tiagra.
I’m a movement coach with a diverse range of expertise ranging from bodybuilding, mobility, and functional movement, and Yoga. Beyond that I am a curious mover who ultimately loves to be challenged and through trial and error I’ve finally crafted a practice in which I’m lucky enough to share with others. My background is in bodybuilding, with two competitions under my belt I understand the dedication and discipline required to achieve fitness goals. At the same time competing taught me the importance of self compassion, learning the hard way how important it is to value yourself. My training method is a blend of both mental and physical components; the physical is focused on strong, intentional movements grounded in alignment and stability, with the mental being focused on honesty, curiosity, and empathy. I strongly believe in the power of movement as a means of pleasure and self-expression as well as a practice to build a strong resilient body . Let me help you create your definition of health.
